How to Become a Disciple of Jesus

To become a Disciple of Jesus, a person needs to do five things:

1. Repent.

Admit you’re a sinner. Confess your sins and repent from your sins.

Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”
Acts 3:19 “Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord.”

2. Believe.

Believe that Christ died for you on the cross.

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
1 Peter 3:18 “Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit.”

3. Gift.

Receive this free gift of salvation. This gift is for everyone who repents and believes in Jesus and they will become a child of God. There is nothing you can do to earn it. It is all by the grace of God, not by any works.

Ephesians 2:8–9 “for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.” Titus 3:5 “not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit.”

4. Receive.

To receive this gift of eternal life, you must repent of your sins and place your faith in Jesus. You can do this by asking God to forgive your sins and to place your trust in Him as your Lord and Savior. Would you like to do that?
John 1:12 “But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God’s children, to those who believe in his name.”
Romans 10:9–10 “that if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

5. Prayer of Repentance:

Dear God, I understand that I have broken Your Law and sinned against You. Please forgive my sins. Thank You that Jesus suffered on the cross in my place and rose from the dead. I now place my trust in Him as my Savior and Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

If you have professed your faith in Jesus Christ and prayed the prayer of repentance, you have become a disciple of Jesus. The bible declares, “For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord is saved.” Romans 10:13

When we profess faith in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven and placed in a new relationship with God as His child. This is what the bible calls being “born again.” (“In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” John 3:3)

This is just the beginning of a wonderful new life in Christ. To grow in your new relationship with Jesus Christ, you should:

  1. Read God’s book, the Bible, every day. Start with the gospel of John in the New Testament. Please look on our website for Bible reading plans to help you read the scriptures daily.
  2. Talk with God through prayer. A prayer life is essential to a growing relationship with God.
  3. Join with others who worship, fellowship, and serves Jesus in a local church that teaches the Word of God.
  4. Live for Christ by letting Him guide your life every day.
  5. Tell others about how they can have a relationship with God.
